With the current economic situation people have experienced salary slash, benefits cuts etc So the rate of companies looking for workers has dropped to a bare minimum and if you’ve happened to get a job interview then congratulations. Since the recession hit, the market has been difficult and yet interesting but if somehow you’ve found yourself out of the job market for a while and you’ve recently decided to come back in then you might be afraid of entering the job market however its not all bad news, there are ways to effectively explain your time away from the work force.

Here’s how to navigate through the stormy sea of explaining the gap in your resume if ;

YOU HAVEN’T BEEN ABLE TO FIND A JOB

Finding a job is really difficult so if you haven’t been able to find one for a while then when asked you should simply state the reason whether its due to your location, personal situation or your industry so you have to be honest. If you are well prepared and confident then being honest is far better.

Don’t hide anything, express your interest to be in the word force, you should also prove that you were not stagnant, that you have been busy with online courses and volunteer work while waiting for the perfect job fitting as this would be bonus points especially if you can talk about how this works ensured that you were still invested and polished in your industry.

YOU HAD KIDS

Its important to note that you cannot apologize for your gap year due to motherhood. You need to trust that the decision you made was best for your family and it in no way affects your expertise. The interviewers would definitely ask you why and this should in no way make you feel like you are being judged, rather see it from a point of curiosity.

To answer their question your answer must come from a place of confidence, let them understand the reasons behind your decision and make them see that is the best decision you’ve ever made. You should also emphasize the volunteer works and online courses you undertook while you were out of work.

YOUR STARTUP FAILED

Don’t be afraid to explain that your startup failed, the new trend this days is for people to start their own business, however it is best that you highlight what you learnt from trying to own your own business and then use the perceived failure to highlight the fact that you are a risk taker, be truthful, honest as there is no need for lies.

Be confident, there is no need to allow the gap deter you, instead you should remember that you have skills that would be of value to the employer. Just believe you can do the job well and sell your best self.

YOU CARED FOR AN AILING PARENT

Many times when we talk about situations like this we are afraid of judgement never be afraid of judgement always know that what you did was right and so you have to be positive. You should talk about how during the time you longed that your family members health be restored so you could get back to work.

If asked you can say something like “I had no choice but to take time off to care for an ailing parent, during this time I felt the need to stay on top of the game by taking online courses and volunteering” Then you can finish off by saying “My circumstances has changed and now I am ready to fully commit myself to work”
