When you live abroad things are certainly different from back home but the urge to hold on to your culture and heritage conflicts with the need to blend in. They say “When in Rome act like the Romans” but this adage only goes so far especially when you understand the need to identify with your heritage. For a long time many Nigerians in diaspora have struggled to fit into a society that clearly has a different sense of everything, there is barely any similarities in the african and western culture and in a bid to save the african culture or should I say teach the african culture to the younger generations of African’s in diaspora, many african born immigrants decided to stay true by wearing the african print fabric.
The african print fabric is of a way of life over here but to those brothers and sisters who are in diaspora its more of a reminder of who they are, their heritage and where they come from. Its a statement of pride and of allegiance with the african race, its an identity, its love and its what they stand for.
Aside’s from our african fashion designers who built the bridge of african fashion to the world, many africans in diaspora have and had already began the journey a long time ago. One of the ways they made the african print famous was by wearing the dashiki caftan which broke into mainstream fashion and we began to see black american celebrities rocking it. From this little beginning came the big bang now african fashion is being received by the world.
The Ankara print is now mainstream, therefore as a nigerian in diaspora its only right that we keep you abreast of the latest Ankara street styles that is taking over.
